FREQUENTLY-ASKED QUESTIONS

Why is real grass better than artificial grass?

Real grass is more natural for dogs and easier to maintain for owners. Most dogs instinctively prefer real grass because it smells and feels like the outdoors. Artificial grass systems must be washed regularly to prevent odor and bacterial buildup. With our service, the grass is replaced regularly, so you don’t have to rinse, scrub, or clean artificial turf in your shower or laundry area. Real sod also helps absorb urine naturally, while the coco coir layer underneath helps minimize odors between swaps.

How big is the pet grass?

Our standard tray size is approximately 2 ft × 2 ft (24" × 24"). This size works well for most small- to medium-sized dogs living in apartments or condos. If you need a larger area, we can place two trays side by side to create a larger grass patch. We will explore using larger pieces of sod if demand increases.

Can I keep the pet grass inside?

Because this is real sod, we recommend placing it on a lanai, balcony, or other outdoor area. Real sod may contain small insects or soil organisms that naturally live in grass. For this reason, we do not recommend placing the tray inside your home. Outdoor placement also helps the grass stay healthier longer because it gets airflow and natural light.

Do you use pesticides or fertilizers?

We spoke with several turf suppliers, all of whom stated that pesticides, fertilizers, and fungicides are standard and necessary for cultivating healthy outdoor grass. These treatments are applied during the growing process. The suppliers have assured us that by the time the grass reaches your lanai, the treatment cycle is complete, and the substances have dried and become inert. This means the grass is safe for both pets and humans to use and interact with as intended.

Can I order grass delivery only?

No. Guinness Grass is a premium full-service tray-swap subscription. This keeps the process simple, hygienic, and convenient. Note that mainland companies charge $40 to $45 to deliver grass only without placement of fresh items or removal of used items.

Do I order weekly or biweekly?

You can choose either weekly or biweekly service depending on your dog’s needs. The most popular subscription is a biweekly service. After a few deliveries, you will get to know your dog's needs.

Why can I only order weekly or biweekly?

Our service schedule was tested using our family dog, Guinness, who helped us understand how the sod performs in a typical Honolulu condo environment. Real sod naturally breaks down over time. Depending on sunlight and usage, we found that grass may dry out or turn brown after one to two weeks. If the sod is oversaturated with urine, your dog may not use it. Regular service ensures the grass stays fresh and usable for your dog.

Do you offer training services?

Although we can recommend tips for training your dog, we do not currently offer training services. However, most dogs adapt quickly because they naturally recognize real grass as a place to go. For puppies or dogs new to grass trays, brief guidance from your regular trainer or treat-training can help speed up the process.

How does the subscription work?

Guinness Grass operates as a subscription service. Your delivery day will be scheduled after we receive your request and confirm service in your area. We will swap your grass on the same day each week or every other week, depending on your plan. A three-month minimum subscription is required to start service.

How does billing work?

Billing occurs automatically on a biweekly basis. For weekly service, we will bill you $130 biweekly. For biweekly service, we will bill you $85 biweekly. All pricing includes Hawaii General Excise Tax (GET).

Can I change my service frequency?

Yes. You can switch between weekly and biweekly service at any time with advance notice.

How does cancellation work?

After the initial three-month minimum, subscriptions may be canceled with 21 days' notice. During the final scheduled visit, we will remove and collect the tray. If the tray is not returned, you will be charged a tray replacement fee of $75.

What screen door do you use to provide Guinness with continuous access to the grass on the lanai?

We use an easy-to-install magnetic screen door with double curtain so Guinness can access his grass on the lanai while we are not home. You can purchase these screens on Amazon.
